We are able to individualize each students treatment plan.

We realize all students are different and have a wide range of issues.

Are you a licensed facility?

Yes.

Cedar Breaks Academy is licensed in the State of Utah under the Department of Human Services as a Residential Treatment Center/ Therapeutic Boarding School.

How long is your program?

The average length of stay is 9 to 12 months. We are a growth based not a time based facility understanding, each child is different.

Are you Co-ed?

No.

We firmly believe a coeducational environment is counterproductive to a teenager's emotional healing. The presence of the opposite sex constitutes a serious distraction.

Cedar Breaks Academy is for females ages 12 through 17.

What types of behavioral issues do you deal with?

We enroll students with academic difficulties, low self esteem, running away, lack of motivation, defiance, anger management, substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, post traumatic stress, attachment disorders, depression, eating disorders, self injury, ADD/ADHD, ODD, OCD and many other mild to moderate mood disorders. We cannot accept students with certain types of diabetes and epilepsy. We cannot take chronic violent behavior problems and severe psychiatric or physical disabilities, which require acute care.

What type of students do you take?

Cedar Breaks Academy is a community-based program that provides for the care and instruction of non-adjudicated girls between the ages of 12 and 17, with an IQ not below 80. All Cedar Breaks Academy programs are conditional according to state regulations. We address a wide range of issues including but no limited to: anxiety, depression, anger management, emotional or sexual abuse, relationship difficulties, attachment difficulties, substance abuse and academic problems.

Do you take pregnant teens?

Yes.

We can take a student who is pregnant until their third trimester.

Do you take Students on medication?

Yes. Med management is available.

Where are you located?

Cedar Breaks Academy is located in the small Southern Utah town of Parowan. We are 15 miles north of Cedar City, an hour north of St. George, 3 hours from Salt Lake City and 2.5 hours north of Las Vegas, Nevada. We are located within hours of several national parks such as Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Great Basin National Park. We also have many state parks around us within an hour or two.

Where is the closest airport?

The closest airport is in Cedar City. There is also one in St George. The easiest and least expensive is Las Vegas.

Can I visit before enrolling my child?

Yes, please make an appointment and we will do everything to accommodate your time schedule.

How many students are in the program?

Up to 42.

We have 32 beds in the family units and 10 beds in the transition home.

Up to 4 students share a bedroom and bathroom.

What is your staff to student ratio?

1 staff member to every 4 students during the day.

1 staff member to every 8 students at night.

Our teacher to student ratio is approximately 1 to 8.

All our staff receives over 80 hours of training in the first weeks of employment.

We are not a lock down facility but are 24 hour staff secure.

What is your religious affiliation?

Cedar Breaks Academy does not have a specific religious affiliation. We do however provide our students opportunities to strengthen any religious beliefs that they may already have. We do encourage our students to find a higher power to help them through their daily struggles. Cedar Breaks Academy instills a positive responsible attitude, while teaching honesty, respect, and integrity. We offer life skills and emotional growth to students with all types of religious backgrounds. At the appropriate level residents will be able to attend various churches with staff supervision.

How often do the therapists see the students?

At Cedar Breaks Academy the students see their assigned therapist once per week for individual therapy. Group Therapy is conducted daily under the direction of the therapist. Family therapy is once a month , beginning with family members, eventually adding the student when she is ready. Students have recreational therapy daily.

Equine assisted therapy is practiced 2 times per month.

We also have a “new” low ROPES challenge course.

Do you provide after care?

Yes.

Your child will be able to continue with their therapist after they graduate the program. Talk to your therapist about the many options available.

What are the qualifications of the therapists?

All of our therapists are masters level clinicians. We have interns who are currently enrolled in the masters program.

What are the qualifications of the staff?

Cedar Breaks Academy only employs qualified trained staff.

We have certified teachers, and credentialed therapists. All employees must pass a background criminal investigation (BCI).

Who is the director and what are his credentials and background?

Stan Allan is the Executive Director/Co-owner of Cedar Breaks Academy. He is hands on with the students on a daiy basis. He has been in the youth industry for over twelve years. He has filled most positions within this industry. He has a BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology.

What about my Child's medical needs?

Each student will provide a medical history and have a physical and psycological preformed upon arrival. We have a registered nurse on staff who performs wellness checks weekly. Your Case Manager will coordinate other medical needs such as dental and vision checks. A psychiatrist will be provided for those on medication in need of medication management.

How do we communicate with our child?

Communication with your child is done through e-mails, scheduled phone calls, letter writing and communication with the case manager and/or therapist. Calls and visits are allowed with the students when they reach the appropriate level.

Can anyone else communicate with our child?

Only those on the students approved list will be allowed to communicate with them.

The only way someone knows your child is here is if you tell them. It is very secure and safe for the students.

How much are the parents involved?

Family is an essential part of the healing process and family therapy is a large part of the program here at Cedar Breaks Academy. We encourage family visits when the student has reached the appropriate level. Family values and relationships are key to the success of the program. Successful treatment requires family participation. We offer family and personal development workshops to help aide in the process. We encourage parents from out of state to schedule their visits during parent workshops.

What is the cost of your program?

Please call the admissions line for tuition costs. Many alternatives and solutions are available. This is a no pressure call.

Are there extra fees over the tuition?

Our fee is all-inclusive, meaning that all basic necessities are provided to the student. Any needs above and beyond basic are not included. Medication, medical needs, optical, dental and psychiatric visits are not covered. The psycological evaluation is included in the enrollment fee.

Does insurance cover any of the cost?

Insurance coverage depends on your individual plan. We do not bill insurance companies. Most insurance companies will pay a portion of the theapy costs which are 40% of our bill. Our monthly statements are broken down so your can get reinbursed.

Do you offer financing?

We work with several organizations that offer long term, low interest loans. Unfortunately we do not offer financial assistance other than putting you in touch with these lending agencies.

Can you recommend an escort service?

Yes.

We have worked with several transport agencies in the past. We also do a limited number of pickups ourselves so that you will meet some of the staff that will be working with your child. Please call and we can arrange to have your child picked up at your home.

What clothes and equipment do we need to send?

Students will wear uniforms provided by Cedar Breaks Academy.

A list of personal items and equipment needed is provided in the admissions package.

Will my child get school credits? Are the academics accredited? Through what organization?

Yes.

While attending Cedar Breaks Academy your child will receive school credits. Cedar Breaks Academy is accredited through Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. Any school in the United States will accept your child's credits.

Do you offer special education or help with learning disabilities?

Yes.

If your child has an IEP or individual education plan it will be followed. We test each student upon arrival and place them where they need to be to actually learn what is needed. We have a certified special education teacher on staff who is in the classroom each day working not only with groups of students, but individual students as well.

Do you give the GED test?

Students can take the GED while enrolled here at a local college in Cedar City.

Are SAT, ACT or other college placement tests available at the school?

Yes.

Testing will be done at Southern Utah University in Cedar City on regularly scheduled dates.

What are the extra curricular activities?

Some of the activities when a student reaches a certain level may include, but are not limited to hiking, fishing, camping, biking, movies, watching rock crawls, demolition derbies, working on automobiles, building things with their hands, service projects, swimming and working out in the gym.

Do you offer any college courses?

Yes.

College courses will be available through an extended program offered by Southern Utah University or BYU.

What happens if my child comes home and falls back into the same old routine?

When a student graduates Cedar Breaks Academy, she will have the tools and skills to be a productive member of her family and society. Because we are not with the student after she leaves, we cannot guarantee that she will use all of these tools all the time unless her treatment is continued after graduation by arranging for therapeutic aftercare thru her therapist.  If up to six months after graduation and before her 18th birthday, after all other attempts have failed including therapeutic aftercare, your child requires readmission; Cedar Breaks Academy will admit them at a reduced rate for the first three months for a thorough evaluation of her behaviors.
